Beetle is given a comb for her curls by the merchant as a gift and she "stood breathless for fear someone would snatch it back." Why does this small gift mean so much to Beetle? Why is she worried someone will "snatch it back?"

  1. I think beetle is worried that someone is going to snatch the comb for her curls is probably because it is very valuable. It also might of been around for a long time. Also, it was probably used by her ancestors. Another thing is that no one has probably given her a gift before. I think she will keep it forever because it was a special gift to her. Last, I think she will hide it so no one will take it.

  2. Beetle thinks the comb is important to her because she has never had anything like it.
She thinks someone will steal it because she is poor and the village boys are mean to her so, when she got the comb she thought someone along the village boys would steal it.( She might have thought that the village boys would steal the comb because she is nothing but a poor girl who lives with a midwife.)
Another reason the comb is important to her is because she has never used one so her hair is not curly, it is dirty, and uncombed. She thinks that this comb is important because she can comb her hair for the first time.
Beetle has nothing but a cat to keep her company, when she got the comb she felt like she was special and she could actually get something for the first time.

  3. I think this small gift means so much to beetle because she has never owned something like this before so it is something she can treasure for ever. Also because in so far we read the midwife has given nothing to Beetle except a name which means nothing to her and food she has to work for, so sence Beetle has never ever had something like this it means alot to her. I think she worried that someone will snatch it back because again she has never owned something like this so it means a lot and you don’t want it stolen or snatched by robbers, people who think Beetle needs nothing, Jane or the midwife, and the mean old village boy’s. If you never have owned and got a small gift free it will mean a lot and you don’t want people who own a lot to take it, snatch it, or steal it from you. Also being a person who knows no home, no family, and no no name but Beetle, Alyce, Dung Beetle, and Brat plus mean, hurtful, and rude name it’s really hard to own your own money and your own possessions so it is very special to you!

    1. Thoughtful response Hailee. Beetle has never been shown kindness and therefore does not feel worthy of such a gift. Mrs. Sherrod

  4. Q2. I think Alyce/ Beetle thinks the comb is very special because she never knew she had curls and she never had a comb before. Another reason I think she would have liked it because it reminded her of the cat she had at the cottage.
and I think she stood in fear that someone would take it back because someone would think it was cool and someone like her shouldn't deserve to have something like that for that person. That is what I think about Brat/Alyce's comb.
